When patients feel like hostages

“Hostage Bargaining Syndrome (HBS), where patients feel intimidated by the doctor, is a very real phenomenon that many patients experience, particularly those with a serious disease or in a state of great vulnerability” says Dr. Leonard Berry of Texas A&M University. Berry and his co-authors explained that in HBS, patients and their family members can feel reluctant to assert their own important interests in the presence of those who are providing care.
