Ask HRC: Must Risk Managers Be Nurses?

Healthcare Risk Control (HRC) was recently asked whether there is any literature to support the appointment of nurses as risk managers in preference to individuals with nonnursing backgrounds.

HRC is not aware of any literature that specifies a required background for a healthcare risk manager. As noted in the HRC guidance article, The Role of the Risk Manager: A Primer, healthcare risk managers have a variety of backgrounds, including nursing, law, insurance, healthcare administration, and finance.
