A decade ago, healthcare organizations’ governing boards broadened their understanding of fiduciary responsibility to encompass the quality and safety of patient care. This marked a significant development in the history of healthcare improvement because, up until then, healthcare boards of trustees typically understood “fiduciary” to mean ensuring the financial vitality and sustainability of the organization as well as regulatory compliance.
