Implementing infection prevention practices across European hospitals: an in-depth qualitative assessment
Healthcare-associated infection represents the most frequent adverse event affecting intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) affect 6% of hospitalised patients in Europe. While CRBSI is amenable to reduction by evidence-based infection control procedures, variability exists in how hospitals implement infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. The current study, termed ‘InDepth’, addresses two questions: (1) what are the main barriers and facilitators to successfully implementing CRBSI prevention procedures?; and 2) what role do contextual factors play?
