Surgeon who removed patient’s testicle is struck off

A surgeon who mistakenly removed a patient’s right testicle then falsely told the patient that it was still there has been struck off the medical register.

Marwan Farouk was performing a laparoscopic operation to remove an epididymal cyst at the private BMI Chiltern Hospital in Buckinghamshire in 2014 when he removed the entire testicle by mistake.

He failed to record in the operation notes that he had removed the testicle, and when theatre staff suggested sending the tissue containing it for histology he replied that there was no need, telling them to “chuck it” or words to that effect. He then placed the testicle in the sharps bin himself. He returned later and tried to retrieve it only to find that the nurses had already removed it.
