The measurement maze
A snapshot of national quality indicators across three clinical areas, and their impact on clinical.
During 2017, quality indicators for three clinical areas were mapped. Multiple organisations were using or collecting indicator datasets: it was difficult to establish which national bodies were looking at which data, and for what purpose. Interviews with 52 clinicians and managers working in five separate teams or units, who were delivering services across the three areas were conducted. If the perceptions of these clinical teams were in any way indicative of those of other teams and clinical areas, it suggests there is untapped potential for using national quality measurement for local quality improvement.
