Situational Awareness and Patient Safety

Situational awareness is the “perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of space and time, the comprehension of their meaning and the projection of their status in the near future.” By teaching trainees to critically examine what they see every day on rounds and at the bedside, we can make patients safer. A case is presented to discuss potential errors and adverse events related to a lack of situational awareness.
